CHAPTER 15
They found themselves outside the lighthouse, peering into the ominous tunnel the switch had revealed. Ian leaned in and shined his flashlight into the narrow passageway. The steps leading into the darkness seemed to go on forever, and no one was willing to take the first step. The group stood there, frozen in anticipation, wondering what lay ahead in the unknown depths of the tunnel.
âWhy does it smell like rotten eggs?â Aimee asked, backing away and pinching her nose.
âThatâs the algae as it decomposes. It releases hydrogen sulfide,â Hunter said. âThe tunnel must lead to the ocean at some point.â All eyes turned to Hunter in surprise. âWhat?â He tried to shrug it off. âI like science.â
âHot, athletic, and smart.â Aimee grinned, reaching to ruffle his hair, but he ducked, avoiding her touch.
âWhatâs the plan?â Everly asked. But no sooner had she spoken the words than she was roughly shoved aside as Ian moved past her.
Ian didnât even wait for instructions; he was the first to enter the tunnel. He was taking the lead.
âHey, wait,â Hunter ordered, but Ian didnât listen. Everly wondered if there was anyone that Ian listened to. She doubted it.
Cass was on Ianâs heels. She gave a small wave of glee before strolling into the darkness without a care in the world. She probably thought she was on a date.
Hunter gestured to Everly to go next, followed by Aimee, and he took up the rear.
The tunnel was cool, with rough stone walls that were slightly damp. There would be a pool of water every few steps, making it slippery. The farther into the tunnel they traveled, the more muted the waves became and were replaced by the sound of soft drops of water.
After a while, the steps leveled off. Cass suddenly stopped, and Everly bumped into her back.
âWhatâs the problem?â She looked around Cassâs shoulder to see Ian paused at a crossroads. The tunnel split into two different paths.
Ian turned, looked over Cassâs shoulder, and made eye contact with Everly. It was like he knew he could trust her.
âWhat do you smell?â she asked, knowing he could use his werewolf senses.
âNo good. They both smell the same. All Iâm getting is kelp from both tunnels.â
Everly frowned and slid past Cass to stand shoulder to shoulder with him. âYou shouldnât be. The one on the right should head back to the ocean; the one on the left should head inland toward the school. It shouldnât smell of kelp unless you are smelling somethingâ ââ
A roar filled the tunnel, and Everly was slammed in the chest, propelled backward into the passageway, and hit the wall. She gasped in pain and blinked as bright spots flickered across her vision. The flashlight had dropped to the ground and spun, reflecting off the walls and illuminating a scary creature that stood ten feet tall. His eyes were burning red, and his body was covered in fur. When he screamed, a mouth with no teeth and a beaked nose were revealed.
Hunter leaped over Everly and stood before her, his hands on his never weapon.
